Top Amateur Billy Morgan Set For October 23rd Pro Debut

Canning Town’s exciting young boxer Billy Morgan is set to make his professional debut, against experienced campaigner Daniel Thorpe from Sheffield, on promoter Frank Warren’s upcoming show at the York Hall, Bethnal Green on Saturday 23rd October.

20 year old Morgan enjoyed an enviable amateur career that netted him many titles including two-time Junior ABA Champion (06 & 07), 4 Nations Gold Medalist and NABC National Champion in 2007. In addition Morgan was selected to represent England on no less than 12 occasions, four times as Captain.

By the time he signed professional papers, in April 2010, Morgan’s stellar amateur record stood at 65 fights with 55 wins.

Since turning pro Morgan, who is managed by Dean Powell, has been under the tutorledge of two of the countries top professional boxing coaches, father and son team, Jimmy and Mark Tibbs and has been training alongside some of the best British boxers, such as Kevin and Vinny Mitchell, Olympian Billy Joe Saunders, former British & European champions Colin Lynes and Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa to name just a few, at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town.

Following one of Team Tibbs’ grueling training sessions Morgan took a little time to talk about his impending pro debut, “I’m really looking forward to my first pro fight against Daniel Thorpe. I’ve looked him up on YouTube, seen what he’s about. I’m excited, I cannot wait.

I’ve really enjoyed getting ready for my pro debut. I’ve learned a lot from both Jimmy and Mark, they’re brilliant trainers, very experienced. Both been there and done it. They were great fighters and now great trainers. Learned loads and loads and much happier with my style of fighting now. I believe the pro style suits me better.

As well as that we’re at a great gym here at the TKO with Johnny (Johnny Eames). Get loads and loads of great sparring here, it’s unbelievable. Been in with Kash (Akaash Bhatia), Vinny & Kevin (The Mitchell Brothers), Georgie (Jupp) Lewis (Pettitt). It’s really good sparring, brilliant sparring for me.

I couldn’t ask for better preparation and now can’t wait until the 23rd to put what I’ve learned into action.”

Billy Morgan versus Daniel Thorpe will be supporting Liam Walsh versus Maxwell Awuku for the Vacant Commonwealth Super Featherweight title on the Frank Warren promoted event at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Saturday 23rd October 2010.

The top quality undercard also features Liam Walsh’s brothers Michael, against Slough’s Ian Bailey, and Ryan, against a yet to be named opponent. Also on the card are former footballer turned boxer Curtis Woodhouse; West Drayton’s light-middleweight Steve O'Meara and the highly anticipated professional debuts of welterweights Bradley Skeete and Ahmet Patterson.
